Turbulence Hits Jet, Injures 22

DENVER (AP) -- Al Mazarri is scared of flying but he wanted to get home to New York. The flight turned into one of his worst nightmares.

Severe turbulence threw American Airlines Flight 242 from Seattle to New York into a terrifying drop Thursday, slamming passengers and their dinners into the ceiling.

At least 22 people were hurt and the Boeing 757 with 148 passengers was forced to make an emergency landing in Denver, hundreds of miles off course.

Passenger Diane Gagon, 43, of Seattle said the plane seemed to drop hundreds of feet in seconds.

``Anyone who didn't have a seat belt on went flying,'' said Gagon, who was treated for a neck injury. ``There was not an item of food left on any tray.''

Mazarri, of Hartsdale, N.Y., struck the baggage rack and needed eight stitches to close a cut in his head. His wife, Marie, complained of pelvic and back spasms. They had chosen the flight after a trip to Alaska.

``The irony of it is we opted to take an early flight,'' said Mazarri, his shirt bloodstained from his wound. ``Our original flight wasn't scheduled for a few days. It was just poor luck.''

Some of the injured passengers arrived at hospitals with white cloths wrapped around their heads. One woman's white blouse was stained with blood. Another man was wheeled in on a gurney.

Most of the injured suffered scrapes and bruises and were expected to be treated and released, said C.L. Harmer, a Denver Health Medical Center spokeswoman.

Gene Huddle of Denver, who was also hurt, said passengers who weren't wearing their seat belts ``went straight to the ceiling.''

Mazarri added: ``It was like running into a brick wall at 600 mph.''

Federal Aviation Administration officials were investigating. Spokesman Mitch Barker said thunderstorms were reported in the area but he did not know how close they were to the jet.

American Airlines mechanics examined the aircraft to determine whether it was damaged. Some passengers were flown to New York on another plane.

Mazarri said flying ``scares the hell out of me,'' but added that the experience ``doesn't sour me on flying.''

Meanwhile, an American Airlines Chicago-to-Newark, N.J., flight stopped in Detroit on Thursday to remove a passenger who asked for an aspirin and complained her head hurt so badly ``she could just kill someone.''

The woman, who was not identified, was questioned by FBI agents for more than two hours before they determined she was not making a threat.

``They considered it was a stupid remark,'' Detroit airport spokeswoman Barbara Hogan said.
